Hi Everyone,
I thought this penny looked a bit odd. To my very untrained eye..I see doubling on the 974 and what in the wold is going on with the strange looking Y? Any opinions would be appreciated:)

The "Y" looks like it was partially grease filled when struck
and the date is a slight case of Machine Doubling.

This is a great example of an over polished die. When dies are polished, the field levels are removed so that the depth of details becomes less. as the depth decreases, the devices thin out. Thes devices are angled slight when fresh. What makes this a CLASSIC case is it was a fairly "fresh" die until a heavy die clash occurred demanding a lot of vigorous polishing. The areas circled in RED are just a few point where the design was polished away. Not the Y and 1 of date are thin and have little depth while other areas are actually aa EDS Early Die State. See the heavy die scratches all over. The reverse shows no sign of a clash, possibly it is a new die(?) Interesting educational coin.

It's an Over Polished die, not Struck Through Grease. If it was, the devices would be widen in size, from the grease blockage. They polished the die, in order to get rid of a Die Clash.
Errers and Varietys.
