1st question:
Exactly what is the difference between an error & a variety?

2nd question:
Can a die crack in the middle & not extent to the rim?

3rd question: Is this a keeper? Yes or no?

First off, the area you are pointing to is called a die chip, A piece of the dies field broke away from the area. To me they are common. Not to the first question:

I'm a coin purist. I like the earlier die states. To me the last 75% of the coin made by the dies will show die events. After you see hundreds/thousands and even more you realize how common some die events area. People save them, but not me. I may save them for images, but have stopped that now that I have so many on the image host. But the die variety is my pick. They are varieties because the die was not correctly made. To me that is important. One of a kind errors are what I enjoy more. Wrong metal, double struck, cracked/split/curved incomplete planchets and I would accept Cuds. But again, I'm a variety purist. Be each one to his own. Probably our coin collections will end up in a coin star when we are gone. (sad to say)

That is why I spend so much time here. Making sure that what I know, you will know. I don't give yes or no answers. I show what I see on a coin, so everyone will know, what I see, rather than saying: "Yes" or "No". They answer a question, but don't help the student to learn why.

This is called a Die Chip, otherwise known as a "Leaky Bucket".
