1964 D Washington Quarter. Thinking MD, Then I Noticed A Split Serif.

Jim0815 Pillar of the Community United States 5239 Posts	Posted 09/14/2018 09:48 am I've had this 1964 D Quarter for quite some time in some bulk silver I had purchased and finally got around to looking at them. This one shows every attribute of being MD with the exception of a split serif on the first T in STATES. Every thing that I have learned from you all tells me MD but every thing I have also learned from you all tells me that a split serif is Doubled Die. I do know that there are DDR's for this year but nothing matches. I also know that MD can occur the same time with Doubled Dies. I learned that from MR. Coop. I'm not seeing the split serif you are referring to, and the "doubling" is extremely textbook MD due to the shelf-like appearance. Keep searching and you'll get the hang of it! coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 09/14/2018 1:06 pm All the distortion on the coin happened after the strike. The dies moved a bit and damaged those devices with the flat, shelf like, contour removed areas on the edges of the devices. That is the affected area. If they were doubled dies, you would see the doubling on the tops of the devices and not on the edges of the devices. On a doubled die the devices are enlarged in size. You don't have to look at the edges to see the hub doubling. You look at the tops of the devices. Report this Post to the Staff
