Recently I purchased the below countermarked Spanish 8 Maravedis coin dated about the time of Philip IV.
This coin is a bit of a mystery to me. I have done some research on the web. It appears that according to the post by Coin Community Member "manilagalleontrade" that this may be a Spanish countermarked "resello" coin. A "calderilla" or loose change coin.

It is possible that the coin has been revalued as well as countermarked.

Any additional information pertaining to the coin, where it may have been minted, the nature of the countermarks etc. would be appreciated.

Also, were the "revaluations" performed during particular years during the 15th Century or at any time? What was the reason for the "revaluations"? Was the Spanish economy undergoing inflation at the time?

Thanks for your help

Squire

I think, that the reason for the evaluating was not only the inflation but also the existence of many contemporary forgeries.

We have a similar situation in the copper coinage of Malta.

I think, that there is a date (1638) recognizable on one of the countermarks on the right picture below the crowned "REX" underneath.

This is the date of one the countermarks, the coin itself is probably older.

Once again, thanks for the feedback coinworldtv
I am still mystified about the meaning of the "REX" countermark.
Is there a reference for these Spanish countermarks that you or other Coin Community Forum members could refer me to?.

From my own research I have found a general reference for the Spanish countermarks at http://www.forumancientcoins.com/bo...34256.0;wap2

From other references it appears that some of the countermarking of 8 Real coins occurred in response to the debasement of the coins by a corrupt merchant / Mayor and his Assayer accomplice in Potosi during the 1640's.

Thanks for showing the coin Dorado
On first inspection it looks like a Maravedis cob with REX? on one side and 1657 as the date.
I would be interested how you interpret the features on the coin.
