When I counted the coins I wanted to sell, I noticed that this cent has a weird line along the rim and the beginning of the motto is .. [pic 3], there is also some double line on the top F, A, M letters on the reverse [pic 1]. These are the best photos I can make.

The coin is XF and doesn't have any mechanical damage.

As I'm new to this, I'd like to ask you, how to call such coin, what caused it, please enlighten me.

The date of the coin always helps a little, but the doubling on the letters looks like common Strike Doubling, no value. The line you see around the outside of the field I have always attributed to die wear. I see this alot while roll searching cents.

I presume it can't be of any value, just want to know what it is. The date is 1987.
I've found a similar LMC with this line labeled as "damaged die"..

I always wondered what caused that extra "line" just inside the rim...I see this too all the time when going thru cents. Thanks for the enlightenment =)

There are some people who call this "double rimmed"...I'm guessing that's a misnomer, correct? What is real double rimming? And is there actually value to that?

I have never heard of the term double rim. I looked in Alan Herbert's Price Guide to Mint Errors and in The Error Coin Encyclopedia III by Margolis and Weinberg. Neither reference discusses a double rim error. My guess is this was made up by someone to describe an effect on a coin they couldn't find the proper name for.

I have seen a similar attribute on Morgan dollars, they say it is Die Deterioration. I believe they call it "Die Sinkage" , I guess when the dies wear out the areas near the rim begin to sink leaving a raised area resembling another rim. I could be wrong on this, but it is very similar to the Die Sinkage on Morgan dollars.

pyrbob - thanks for the feed back! Now I know what causes this effect and what it is properly termed - Die Deterioration. =)

Well just to throw in another term - I've seen it called "Die misalignment". In any case, it's quite common.

coppercoins.com may help you. you can search the date to see if this is common or recorded. also list prices per grade for each error.

It's not recorded there, however, some equally minor ones are. Anyway thanks for the explanation. Now I know what to write in the description of this coin

I am glad someone else brought this up because I was wondering about the extra line around the edge as well. I am not sure if there are certain dates that show it more than others but most of the ones I have found are 1986 and 1987. If anyone has other dates that jump out more it might be nice to have a list and see which ones to avoid.
