Many of you know I have been building a collection of the family of Eleanor of Aquitaine. I have the following coins.

Eleanor
Henry II
Guillaume X
Louis VII
Richard I
Geoffrey Duke of Brittany
Henry III
Louis IX
Edward I

I have now added a penny of John. I thought I found one last month but it ended up being Henry III instead. I am very excited about this coin because I finally found one, and because of its provenance. It is a reference coin in J.P. Mass' Sylloge of the Coins of the British Isles (SCBI) 56, and was part of his personal collection. I would like a copy of SCBI to go with the coin. Unfortunately they are very sought after and command quite high prices. If anyone sees one available for under 150.00, please let me know.

I really like the look of this coin.

John (1199-1216), Penny, class VIa2, London,
Walter, walter · on · lvn, 1.40g/4h
(SCBI Mass 1755, this coin; N 974/2; S 1353).

Wonderful!

Great portrait, clear details all around. Super coin.

I see that this one still bears the name of Henry. I don't know English coins so well, but realize this was a common practice in medieval times. Were there also later pennies issued with John's name?

Wow, a pedigreed plate coin that fills a gap in your collection. Now that's a sweet pick-up. Congrats, Andrew.

Thanks to all for the kind comments.

@tdziemia
All the John and Richard pennies of England have Henricvs in the obverse legend. This series included Henry II, Richard, John, and Henry III. Anglo-Gallic coins of Richard do not have a portrait but do have his name in the legend. As for John, his pennies of Ireland have an abbreviated form of IOHANNES, his name, and his portrait on the obverse.

All of John's coins are scarce to rare and this is a superb pedigreed example! Well done & congratulations.
