I'm helping my cousin liquidate a bunch of primarily old, silver coins and among them are gobs of Morgans she purchased over the years from Littleton. They're all in these little, completely sealed, cellophane packets that state the year, the mint and Littleton's estimation of the grade right on the packet. As my cousin received these in the mail she would write what she paid for them right on the little packet. It's a good thing that she doesn't really need to liquidate these because, in my opinion, almost all of these would currently fetch LESS than what she paid for them. One of them was an 1882-CC that was graded as MS-60 and which cost her $335 back somewhere around 2001. Please don't ask me for photos. Instead, let's just pretend that the MS-60 grade was spot-on and it was just a garden variety 1882-CC. Would such a coin ever have been worth $335?

That's quite a bargain. Less than the "leading numismatic catalogue".

Whoa - 82, 83, & 84 are the most "common" CC dollars - and Littleton is a rip off company, might as well buy from Coin Vault. The 82 CC in MS60 should be around 200/225$ area

Yeah, well, I had no idea she'd been doing this all those years or I might have alerted her. As I said, she doesn't NEED to liquidate...just wants to because she's getting on in years and her kids and grands have no interest in coins.

If they ever were it would probably have been around August of 89 at the top of the crazy market. At that time MS-65 1881 S dollars were approaching $1000 each. 60's though may not have been as badly affected. If you really want to know check out the Newman Numismatic portal, They have every issue of the graysheet available from 1963 to within the past two years.

No intention to piss you off. Just telling true info. My Dad (rest his soul) fell for the same Littelton brochures. They advertise in magazines for free coins, just pay shipping. THEN they put you on their mailing list - coins by mail. They send you coins and either you keep them and pay for them or send them back. Cheesy operation! AND their grading stinks - sorry, can't say what I really think
Rest in Peace

I wouldn't pay more than $160 for a MS-60 1882-CC Morgan.

... and yes, I buy nice ones (MS-63/64) from dealers for $170-$180 ...
You just have to buy in volume.

Littleton is a huckster company that preys on naïve customers that read their advertisements in popular magazines. It's their business model and has been for decades.

Anything from Littleton now is overpriced. Their business model dictates it to be that way for them to stay in business.

They used to offer silver eagles “at our cost” years ago “with a strict limit of 5 per customer” in the Sunday newspaper supplements. I used to order those and would return the approval junk. That went on for a few years until they finally figured out what was going on.

They don’t like me anymore.

But how can this be? They are the "leading numismatic catalogue" that all the TV coin guys always refer to.

They wouldn't try to take advantage of children by advertising in comic books, now would they? And the TV coin guys wouldn't refer to their catalogue in order to take advantage of naïve adults, I just can't believe it.
