I bought an 1856 3 cent silver coin that is slightly larger than my type 1 and type 3 coins. This seems weird and a google search turns up only one source suggesting this size difference is correct. The Red Book and breen encyclopedia make no reference of it.

Has anyone else seen this?

Thanks for that link. I don't collect these, but over a long life of coin addiction, I was unaware of any size differences.

Wikipedia has nothing on a change in diameter either. They note the change in weight and fineness but the diameter is listed as consistently 14mm.

The article is wrong, the diameter was unchanged for the entire run 1851 to 1873. In 1853 the fineness was increased and the weight was decreased.

The only larger ones are the 1865-1889 17.9mm nickel 3 Cents.
Maybe this is what they are referring to.
All the 1851-1873 silver coins are 14.3mm.

Here's a link to the coin I bought:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1856-3-Cen....m2749.l2649

It measures in just under 15mm. So is it a counterfeit, regular strike, broadstrike, or PMD "squished like a pancake"?

The reverse looks a little off-center (the rim seems thicker on the right) but also looks damaged on the left; the obverse just looks worn. I vote "squished" but

The rim is a little off, as if it was struck out of the collar, but well centered...

I don't collect them either. It's a shame so many of these are in such bad condition. I only have one. I'm not worried about the size or if it's genuine. It's graded and in my type set.

The devices seem "squashed". Areas that should be flat or rounded are concave. For example the ends of the C on the reverse or the ribbon know around the arrows. It's almost like someone tried to make a "Texas" trime. I think it has been pounded post strike.
