I've Heard Of Nic-A-Date But What Are These?

GrapeCollects Pillar of the Community United States 8938 Posts	Posted 09/26/2018 9:32 pm So I've heard of Nic-A-Date and used it in order to restore some 0.2$ dateless buffalos for a set of restored buff's I put together. But I've never heard of these other products made by Nic-A Co. Here's some links. Nic-A Spray? Nic-A-Rag? Nic-A-Tone? Nic-A-Brush? Nic-A-Lene? What is this? Mark1959 Pillar of the Community 7234 Posts	Posted 09/26/2018 11:19 pm Tried Nic-a-Tone awhile back on some horribly cleaned pink looking large cents - it took awhile to practice on them and after treatment it turned them black with copper streaks - had to let it dry for a day then give it another application - covered the streaks but was left with a flat black coin - UGLY!! And those "cleaning" brushes are nothing but brass wire - I'll let you figure out what a brass wire brush does to a coin's surface. I can't believe Wizard coin supply actually carries that crap - although Nic-a-Date does work on Buffaloes but renders them as damaged cause that is nothing but a weak acid. I guess that would be ok on a rare date for a filler coin but otherwise NO THANKS! Report this Post to the Staff

In all honesty, I would never use any of those products on a coin I cared about. For experimenting on junk, sure, it might be interesting. A brass-wire brush, seriously? This is all you need to know about the description: Quote: Will not scratch your coins if the directions are followed as outlined in Nic-A-Lene's booklet "How to Clean Coins". Comes two brushes per pack. If? From what I can see, the booklet containing the directions is not actually included with the brushes. This reminds me a bit of McDonald's. They have so many registered trademarks you wouldn't believe. I swear "McFamily" is a trademark of theirs. I'd stay away from the Nic-a-Date as well. It is just ferric chloride and you can buy ferric chloride a lot cheaper. Nic-a-Date is about $5 an ounce, and you can buy ferric chloride for less than a dollar an ounce. Even less if you buy the dry powder and make up your own solution.
