I am wondering if anyone might be able to help me. I have a 1903-O Barber quarter. There are the letters "TR" stamped or imprinted on the face of the coin very clear and fairly deep into coin but do not go through to the back. They cover the neck and part of the face. and one the back of the coin there is a slight stamp or impression but I can not make out what it might be but it is not the TR from the front coming through. I inherited this coin from my fathers collection from when he was a coin dealer and jewler and know there is some value to this but not sure what. If anyone could help with some answers I would appreciate it.

Most likely someone was playing around with a new set of letter punches. If that's the case you're talking bullion. If on the other hand it can be traced to a known person/business/government then it would have some additional value as a counterstamp. Counterstamps have been coming into their own in the past decade and values for them have been rising. Unfortunately this has also lead to coins stamped with random etters or nuber being promoted as "unlisted" counterstamps and offered for large amounts. They have missed the pint. It doesn't matter if it is listed or not, if it can't or hasn't been traced back to its source it is just random damage until it is traced.

It is possibly a Presidential campaign reference for Theodore Roosevelt since he was President from 1901-1909. However, the date of 1903 does not match his reelection campaign which would have been in 1904. This is just speculation on my part and there is no way to prove it but it makes for an interesting possible history lesson

Now, time for you to go research the election of 1904

I suspect finding new coins in 1904 was as difficult as it is for me to find new 2008 coins today!

Probably not when you are on the sitting President's re-election committee.

Probably just a counterstamp.
