Just wanted to share my excitement ...I've just ordered a Dansco 7070, and I'll be starting my Type Set. Woohoo! Those of you who have completed or are working on your type set, how many of you use proofs for some of the more modern coins? I was thinking of placing silver cameo proofs for the Bicentennial set, and proofs for SBA and Sac... I know, the Type Set is a very personal selection of what each of us want, but I'm just curious what you guys ('n gals) have used to construct your sets

I just started mine recently. I'll probably end up buying each coin in a budget condition and then worry later about upgrading each coin. Some of the coins get pretty pricey beyond VF/EF. Many years down the road, I hope it would be filled with all AU/BU coins.

I have proofs for most or all of the modern coins. I don't remember how much they cost, but they're reasonably inexpensive considering their high quality. If you buy a proof set from before 59, you'll get a Wheat cent and silver coins, and one from after 65 will get you a Memorial cent and the clads. WheatieFan

I've also recently started a 7070. Going for a higher grade album, VF+ for all but the most expensive coins. Of course that's relative to who your talking to, but for my budget they are expensive coins. All my modern coins are proofs. Going to take a loooong time to fill all the holes, and I'll probably never be finished upgrading. But so far to me it is the most eye appealing album I'm working on, and the most fun. I just like to pull it out and enjoy the coins.

I'm also working on my 7070, just 30 coins to go. The first 30 or so were fairly easy to find, but it's been pretty slow going on the rest. I don't have any proofs in mine & don't think I will get any in the future. I don't think they would look "right" with the rest of the set.
I started out thinking I would get all AU or better coins. After checking my wallet I had to decide that wasn't realistic. Like most people, I am buying the highest grade I can afford.

I used some proofs in mine on the modern coins like the commemoratives and even some of the others like the Kennedy silver half and the Franklin half, I even used some proofs for a couple of the Lincoln cents and the State Quarter is proof as well Quote: I started out thinking I would get all AU or better coins I am keeping my album in Au or better, that way the proofs don't look to bad with the other coins in the set. If you were going to put some lower grade coins in the set then a proof may look out of place in the album to some people but I find the proofs esthetically pleasing and in my opinion doesn't kill the look of the other coins in the set. I did use the uncirculated bicentenial set just because I didn't like the look of those proofs in the set ,I had proofs in there at first but bought the silver uncirculated set to replace them

I've a question.... Isn't a Proof coin a "type" of coin. I'm no Type Set expert, but if there are Commemoratives (which generally do not circulate) in the 7070, shouldn't there be at least one spot for a Proof coin?

I'm with trdhrdr007, I don't like the idea of putting proofs in my 7070. I would rather eventually have all my coins with a consistent mint luster as opposed to some of the coins with mirrored fields. I'd only put proofs in it if they could all be proofs. ;)

Another question...for those of you who crack open slabbed coins to put into your 7070 album, I know a lot of you tape the tag onto the back cover (which I think is a brilliant idea)...but what happens when/if you decide to upgrade?

I used proofs in mine whenever I could for the modern coins. I think they look fine with the others. I went for VF or better on the older types, but I am moving along with upgrading to AU, although I probably won't complete that for all of the more expensive types. I have also recently begin thinking about switching out some types for others that are more interesting, but of a similiar grade. For instance I just switched out a 1817 Coronet Large Cent in VF for a Coronet LC 1820/19 in VF. Wanted to have an overdate somewhere in the set. Still having fun.

Quote: what happens when/if you decide to upgrade? I made up my mind when I started my 7070 album that I would put AU or better problem free coins in it and once a coin was in there it will always be there, no upgrading so I do put tape over my labels for a laminated look but if that wasn't my plan, I would just have stuck them on the back cover with glue or what ever and if I upgraded it, it should be rather easy to remove and replace with the upgrade label of any other coin that took its place or another's place down the road

I love putting proofs in. I have proof Bicentennials, Ike, Kennedy, modern quarters/dimes/nickels/cents, etc. I also "cheated" and put a proof Andrew Jackson in place of the Sacagawea, because they're basically the same and I don't like the Sacagawea dollar.

I have one proof in mine, the 1982-S Washington Commemorative. I bought both 1982 Washington Commemorative Half Dollars (uncirculated and proof) from the mint in 1982. I decided they belonged in the 7070 together.

I'm working on a 7070 too and I'm not going to include ay proofs. My set is EF/AU so the most expensive coins will be EF. I've bought lot of slabbed coins for the set but haven't cracked them out yet. And I'm not going to till I have all the coins I need for the album. That way if a nicer example comes along I can trade easily.

The question I have for everyone on this is: Do you collect common dates or hard to get dates? It seems that if you are doing common dates then it would not be that bad for about half of the collection but if you are going for hard to find dates, this set could be next to impossible to do.
Personally, I am doing the nicest coin I can find for the best price, so some are proofs that I have got for almost nothing. My older coins are lower to mid range in grade and I love to see the difference in color and grade as I flip through the book. I know that I will never be able to buy higher grades of a lot of the 19th century coins and have no problem with that, so buying proofs of the more recent coins works just fine for me.
