I've never been to a coin meeting, what's it like? I don't know if other clubs are like ours, but here is what goes on. Generally there are about 25 people in attendance. The meeting starts with the Pledge of Allegiance then a prayer. Afterwards the minutes of the last meeting are reviewed and the treasurer gives a report. Members make announcements or introduce new business. New members and guests introduce themselves. There are two door prizes: one for everyone attending that night then one for members who were present at the last meeting. After this someone gives a presentation (15 - 30 minutes) on some numismatic topic. Next is the raffle with about ten different items up for grabs. The final part is the auction, in which members have brought items for sale - usually about 30 - 50 coins, notes, rounds, bars, etc. Here is a coin I won in the raffle last week: Netherlands East Indies (Holland) 1 Duit 1734  Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Around here, the only meeting from time to time is some wise guy gathering the old folks in one of our recreation centers to rip them off of their gold or silver...  |

It's nice to meet with a group of people who also have this very uncommon "hobby". Most of the other members mainly collect US coins or are stackers, but there are a few who are interested in world coins. You should try to find a club, even if it's a short drive. Many of our members are from out of town and drive an hour to get here. I'm lucky that we meet only a mile from my house. Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

It would be awfully nice to only collect but I have to invest as well. Its a delicate balance. Today I locked in another Krugerrand at $3,363.70, which I believed to be floor, and it was.  Today I take possession of 10 more silver Philharmonics.  While I enjoy these coins, and enjoy protecting my money, I have some numismatics loaded to check out with too but will have to wait. |

Great scores at a Boot Fair (like a big garage sale) yesterday. A guy had a bowl of coins for 25 pence each... Big Greek 20 drachma from 1973:  Big Italian 10 centesimi from 1911:  Papal States 20 baiocchi 1860, a bit battered but silver:  Argentina 10 pesos 1964:  Honduras 2 centavos 1974:  And... A 1699 Norwegian 2 skilling. Not in great shape, but where else can you get a 17th-century silver coin for this price?  |
