Fantastic coins, Moniker! I really like seeing these treasures you acquire because I never see them in real life.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

...Just received this coin this morning. I won it in a bid, with no mention of the coin being struck over another coin (although, I could see some evidence in the pics), as these coins were produced using other country's coins as a planchet. If the under type can be identified, the coin commands a significant premium. (As a side note: early US law stipulated that Brazilian 960 reis were not legal tender unless a Spanish 8 reales under type was visible.) ...I spent the better part of the afternoon examining this coin, & discovered enough of the original surfaces to determine that the original "planchet" coin was / is a Spanish colonial Mexico City mint 8 reales of Charles IV, 1807. ...The original coin (39mm) was pressed out to 40.75+mm, thus stressing & deforming the original surfaces a bit, but the visible details match very closely.... ...on the coin's obverse, I found the 1 8 - 7 (for 1807 ... the '0' is obscured), the "L" in proper position (for "CARLOUS", confirming the king, thus confirming the 1807 date), as well as partial letters of the edge motto. Also, slight, but identifiable parts of the right edge of Chas IV's bust are barely discernible, but there (see pic)... ...On the reverse, the word "REX", followed by the Mexico City mint mark ( o/M ) are visible, in the proper location, as well as faint traces of the original coin's Bourbon shield (see pic)... ...Overall, all of the info needed to pinpoint the host coin's date & mint ... ...this increases the coin's value, but, the best part is looking for & matching the clues. ...I think I've found a new sideline to this hobby...Forensic Numismatist ...
