I cashed a check at Chase today. Imagine my surprise and shock when I opened the teller envelope and found this in with the change...   First 90% silver I've pulled from change in over 5 years, and the first 90% silver quarter I've pulled from change in 10+ years. Reverse pic is a bit blurry, but you get the idea! Yesterday I added to my collection one of those coins that has been on my wants list for a long time! In 1815, during the period when Napoleon returned to power for 100 days, the British Royal Mint struck 871,581 gold 20-franc coins bearing the portrait of the exiled King Louis XVIII. They were engraved by British coin designer Thomas Wyon, copying the standard French dies, and were used to pay Wellington's troops in France. It's a rare example of a Royal Mint coin bearing a mintmark (R), a French coin struck in Britain and the only coin struck in Britain bearing the date 1815 - when the new Royal Mint on Tower Hill would have been busy preparing for the following year's great re-coinage:  |

That's  worthy toning and on a 1916-D to boot... I call those "lifetime coins" as in I can never hope to afford one in my lifetime. Looks FSB or nearly so, to boot. It's a 64FB. 16-D is low mintage, but they were well made, so most MS examples (and even some AU) are well struck and FB. I thought I'd never have an MS example in my lifetime either, but I was patient. But I'm not sure it's the toughest date in the series. |
