Austria - 1551 Groschen (3 Kreuzer)
Vienna mint. AR, 21-22mm, 1.9g. Slightly ovate flan.
Ferdinand I (Habsburg), future (1558) Holy Roman Emperor
The obverse shows a youthful bust of Ferdinand I facing right; the reverse has the Imperial Eagle, encircled, with the ends of a Teutonic cross at right angles, the topmost dividing the date.
By 1556 the bust had changed to show an older King with a beard and mustache, and heavy age lines on his face, perhaps reflecting the loss of his wife Anna in 1547 and the religious/political tensions dominating Habsburg affairs. His tenure as Holy Roman Emperor ended with his death in 1564, a mere 6 years after claiming the title.
