No Swedish coins from Charles XIV in my collection, but this 1834 Guernsey 8 doubles is at least contemporary.  The Channel Islands are special and almost peculiar in many respects, and that also goes for their 19th century coinage. Not only did they choose not to go directly for British currency when having to leave the traditional pre-revolutionary French money - that seems like the natural step for an ignorant foreigner like me, but I am sure there was a multitude of reasonable causes from the islanders' perspective - but Jersey and Guernsey also chose different solutions (Jersey, for its part, chose 1/13th of a shilling coins). But let's not go into those details here. Instead, let's go back to the main subject of this thread: Scandinavian royalty!  @Princetane, I'm impressed that you know about the Stockholm Bloodbath! Not well-known outside of Sweden, I expect. The square in Stockholm's Old Town, where a large part of the Swedish nobility and others were beheaded on order by the Danish king, is still there, and some of the houses around the square are from that time. Among those executed was the father of Gustav Vasa, who then started a rebellion and war against the Danes, which ended with him becoming king of Sweden. Since then we have changed royal house a couple of times, when the monarch has converted to Catholicism and taken off to Rome, or been forced to abdicate due to general incompetence, or simply died childless. The Bernadottes seemed capable and willing the last time we needed a swap, and they are still on the throne. Next in line is HRH Crown Princess Victoria, who will become Victoria I in due time. (Queen Victoria of Great Britain is among her ancestors, but she is not named after her.) |

@Dearborn, quite interesting comparison. I've never interested in Egypt coins. Can you give me some links to the type of Egypt coins you are comparing with, in case you did it with some exact type:)

I'm in the upgrade phase for my complete U.S. classic commemorative set, and while I've not done much with it recently I did receive one new upgrade today - a nicely-toned PCGS MS66 Antietam commemorative with a CAC sticker. This will replace a PCGS MS64 Antietam I've owned almost 8 years. The color in the pic is fairly accurate - the label is more of a yellow color on this older holder, for some reason. Thanks! When I first started building this set many years ago, I was always looking for "blast white" mint state examples. Then, over time, I began to appreciate the character and attractiveness that toning can bring to a coin, as well as finally realizing that most of those nice white coins had been dipped. Of course, what is considered attractive toning is very much an individual choice - I know pretty much as soon as I see a toned coin if I like it or not!
