A new direction for me, I just won this weird beauty




This is an Ottoman Turkish 2 Zolota silverish (46%) coin. It apparently dates from year 10 of Abdul Hamid's reign, but not Abdul the damned from around 1900, his ancestor the first Abdul Hamid who ruled between 1774 and 1789.

So it dates from around the year 1784 and is pretty much the stereotypical belly dancing coin or a coin, women in the middle east wore in a headress.

This is apparently the guy who wore a necklace of human ears around his neck in the Catherine the Great miniseries on TV. Probably not true, but this sultan lost a lot of the Ukraine and Crimea to the Russians via Orlov and Pomtemkin.

A Zolota was 30 para or ¾ of a Kurus, so 133.33 Zoloty = 1 Lira, so this is 1½ Kurus basically.

The date you can see at bottom is AH 1187 (1773/74) and the script on the other side has Abdul Hamid 10 of his reign, which is the regnal year.

Looks cracked as these were very thin apparently and shaped like a wafer. A few weeks ago I showed a Beslik from 1832, this is even older and takes my Ottoman collection back beyond the usual machine made WW1 keepsakes of the 1900s era.

I am bidding on another Zolota tonight and a Yuzlik (100 Para or 2½ kurus) from a slightly later era (Selim III 1793 - 1808).

To me I love the British silver and Kiwi and Aussie stuff, but there is a large world of coins and I have always had an interest in the Ottoman Empire as it was successful for a long time and was a real East meets West thing. It bridged the era from Medieval to Modern.

Here is the 2nd coin I won the Yuzlik of the sultan Selim III (1789 - 1803). He was the last traditonalist and to wear a turban, long flowing Islamic gown and kaftan more than the Strambouline (That brocaded waistcoat) and Fez of Mahmoud II and his successors (The last two sultans favoured 3 piece suits with Fezzes, hardly ever Islaming it up which angered many of the Arab peoples in their empire).



This is the Yuzlik (2½ Kurus or 100 Para) and the fact it weighs the same as the 2 Zolota shows you how bad the economy and inflation was there (Well the empire was shrinking crazily at this time thanks to Russia and Austria). The date AH 1203 is at the bottom which is 1789, but the year Selim was ensultanated. Its the same on the 2 Zolota above, first image, bottom row.



The other side which is a verse glorifying the Sultan. The year of his reign is the 3rd row, near the left you can see what looks like a heart shaped circle inverted. This is the figure for "5" meaning Year 5 of the reign or 1207AH. It is the same with the coin above. Third row down on the second shot, you will see a "1" and a dot. This is 10 in Arabic.

I can't wait to get these, just fascinating and surprisingly perfectly round, yet the proper coin press only arrived in 1844!
