This acquisition dates to Sept. 2021, but the seller held it until I had additional purchases, to spread the postage cost, and it was just received yesterday. Hungary, scyphate copper coin, 27 mm, from the reign of Bela III, 1172-1196, Huszar 72. It was the first Hungarian coin to use an image of Mary (there was a hiatus of over 250 years until the next and was then used continuously for about the next 350), and also unusual for being the only copper coin struck there during an era of silver denars, as well as for its large size. The design imitates contemporaneous Byzantine coins. These must have been struck in enormous numbers, because well preserved specimens in high grade are readily available (I know several other members have one). Crazy to think it was minted in 1992! Easy to see why those didn't last long. The other coins are a 20 cent from Cuba, 1 Krueger from austria, 50 pennia from Norway, 10 cent from Italy, 1 cent from the Netherlands during nazi occupation. Report this Post to the Staff
