Quote: Very nice polar bear, GLB. I need to find one for my polar bear collection. APMEX has the 1.5 oz Polar Bear and the 1.5 oz Polar Bear & Cub. They also have a few that are 1 oz, 3/4 oz and 1/2 oz silver coins featuring the polar bear.

This one arrived just the other day! From Syd Martin's collection, I present a French Colonies 1722-H 9 Deniers or Sou from La Rochelle Mint. Came with the Syd's personalized 2x2 envelope and some notes on the coin. Provenance: From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Purchased from John Kraljevich, April 2010. The plate coin for the middle die state of reverse D.5 in the 2015 Martin reference on French coinage for colonial America, p. 386. and a nice write up on these interesting and "Most American" of all the French colonies types of coinage, by either John Kraljevich or Kevin Vinton - both of whom cataloged this sale for Stack's/Bowers Galleries.

nice addition, GLB ... Another beauty!... ...Mexico City mint, established by the Spanish in early 1536, is the New World's first mint, & has produced some of the world's most beautiful & most sought-after coins ... sought after by collectors for their exceptional designs, & sought after by merchants for their silver purity & weight ... sought after by pirates because of their abundance...Aye, aye Matey!..

Thanks for the kind replies to my post, mrwhiskers you'll be happy to know that coin was only $105.00, not a really expensive coin, heck I paid more for Syd's book on French coinage than the coin! I have around a dozen coins from Syd's collection now, only a few are slabbed, the real bargains were his early French billon Douzain and Quinzain coins with and without counterstamps I was winning those at the Stack's auction with bids of $20 to $40 each on many.
So you can get into some real colonial history for not a lot of $$$ outlay.
