I bought this coin recently. I am yet to receive it. I took a chance and now I'm wondering if it may look fake to the experts. I could return it or ask seller to cancel, as it stands now. It cost me $54.50. Thanks for help. BTW I'm not sure what the edge should look like, though I have an idea

The photographs are not good enough to be certain, but on the first sight, the coin appears to be authentic.

Edge-pictures and a better camera could help to find out more about it.

Was it advertised as shipwreck salvage or dug? Otherwise, I don't like the way the details look so soft in some areas.

You can not expect a mint state coin for that money. It is a bargain if authentic.

The edge of a Lima 8 Reales should use the colonial style edge consisting of alternating circles and rectangles which was used at all of the Spanish colonial mints. Each mint's edge was however slightly different making the design unique in each case.

The edge should be evenly spaced and each circle MUST be identical in wall thickness and size. The design MUST overlap at two and only two locations exactly opposite one another (180 degrees apart). The length of each of the overlaps should not exceed 2-3 segments. The edge design should cover the ENTIRE edge of the coin (for Lima or Potosi but not for Mexico City). The design should not wobble rapidly side to side.

Since the edge is the side most people do not bother to look at forgers tend to forget to match the details precisely. So if you could post pictures of the edge it may be able to authentication easier.

The 1794 Lima IJ is a coin that has been forged in China recently and some examples are actually silver. So be cautious.
