Heritage has posted that this coin is worth $60,000 wholesale. So why did it sell for $600?

And before I get the ignorant comment 'because it's a details coin', I should point out that I'm well versed on how details coins price at auctions.

Maybe everyone who was considering buying it mistook it for a large 7?

Edit: Hang on it looks like a large 7 to me, I dont see a tail on the 7

after seeing the comparison images.

Is the large 7/6 a lot more common?

This variety, S-273, is very common, R-1. There are 174 sales records alone in the HA archives.
That is a very large number for a draped bust cent, even R-1's (by large cent standards).

This coin has EF details or close to it (somewhat lower details by EAC standards) but the pronounced obverse corrosion will reduce the net grade substantially.
At the end you have an EAC 20 or so coin, of a very common variety. That explains the seemingly low price.

I agree with GERMANICVS, a quite common coin. The details grade impacted the price as well.

Wow! Stunned that Heritage got this wrong. I saw the $60,000 estimate and followed it. I'm not knowledgeable on large cent varieties. If it was bid up and the winner purchased the coin based on Heritage's wholesale estimate, they have a serious beef with the auctioneer.
