My company purchased a collection yesterday and in it was a modern U.S. Mint "coin box" similar to those used for commemoratives. Inside the jewel case was a circulated 1921 Morgan. I didn't think anything of it, appraised it and went on with the rest.
This morning as I detailed the inventory, I pulled the jewel case out of the mint-box and there I find a CoA for the Morgan!? It says "This historic coin was part of a collection stored in the vaults of the San Francisco Mint and released for public sale in 1997." Although I have been collecting since I was a boy and have owned a numismatic company since 1995, I have never before seen one of these. If this is common, I guess I've been living under a rock! Does anyone have any detailed information about this coin sale? How many? How much? Were these coins stored in the vaults since ? I'd appreciate any information that can be provided. Many thanks.

The US Mint and the Department of Treasury have not released any Morgan or Peace silver dollars since the 1970s GSA sales. You have a coin with aftermarket packaging and a worthless COA. Best guess is that this coin came from a bag or private collection that came to the market in 1997, hence the "released for public sale", and it is deliberately vague about who or what actually released it in 1997. Marketing companies have found that advertising a coin as "coming from a hoard" or "just released to the public" add a perceived value to the coin for non-collectors or novice numismatists but in reality, most "hoard" provenances do not add any value at all.

Biokemist6... Not that I challenge you, but do you have support for your opinion? This Mint Box and CoA look as genuine as they could possibly be. I'll be happy to provide photographs of the CoA if they are permitted on the site.
AGCoinHunter... I'm located in East Marietta...but mostly on line as AtlantaCoin or Atlanta Coin & Currency Co., LLC

Nice, your about less than 5 miles from me. I actually grew up in the neighborhood behind the shopping center you are in. If your open on the weekends, I am going to swing by and see what you got.

you can post pictures of the coin and the coa if you would like and it would help us better answer your question if you did. I am guessing this was a private company selling off coins that they say were stored in a bank for all those years and they are selling off their coins but its not a US mint product nor a US Govt sale

Biokemist is wrong. There was a later release of dollars AFTER the last of the GSA sales in 1980. It COULD be a piece sold by the mint
In the GSA inventory in the 1970's there were 321 coins that were determined to be too badly damaged to be part of the sale. Those 321 coins were used as part of a display at the old San Fransisco Mint until the mint was closed down for structural deficiencies. Later it was decided to dismantle the exhibit and the coins were sold on the Mint mailing list. If I remember correctly the price was $40 apiece. The sale caused a lot of hard feelings at the time. There were many people who felt left out because they couldn't get one when they sold out almost instantly. (321 coins don't go very far.) Some stupid people were upset because they were hoping to get a rare date/mint coin. (If they had read the offering it said right in it that the group had been examined and any scarce/rare coins had been removed.) But most were upset because for their forty dollars they got low grade and/or damaged common coins that could be purchased at any dealer for about $10. (duh, these were the REJECTS from the GSA sale!)
Now problems with this possibility. I thought that sale took place earlier than 1997, like in the late 80's. I would agree that we need to look at the box and the COA to be sure.

Interesting information about the GSA Reject sale. Your description sounds well informed do you by chance have a link or scanned article that references the event?

Quote: Your description sounds well informed do you by chance have a link or scanned article that references the event? Heh. Having watched him in action these last few years, I pretty much attribute to Conder101 himself these days, rather than whatever his original source might have been. If Conder says it, take it to the bank.

Hey all. When Bio and Fenton sounded so sure of themselves, I couldn't buy into it holding an authentic looking CoA and packaging. So a friend got me in touch with the folks at Coin World. Looks like they may resurrect a 1997 copy of the news and republish as an update in a future article. Not too many folks were aware of this Morgan release. And now I've found a second one in the bottom of the box! Jeez...maybe their worth... I'll be more than happy to share a picture or two if I can figure out how to post pictures! Lol

Apparently, this is the biggest secret in the history of the US Mint because I can find no record of this supposed sale anywhere Of course, pictures with the original post would have helped.

Here's a couple of pics of the CoA. I haven't heard back from Coin World this morning, but I'll keep you updated.

Superdave, I appreciate the vote of confidence but I'm not always right. On this one I am sure of everything except the date of when it occurred. And it was reported/discussed in Coin World when it happened. Mainly because of the gripes, so I'm not sure it would be found as an article. It might only be found in the letters to the editor. (People love to gripe about the Mint.)
