Visited a new dealer today and they had something unusual that I've never seen before. It was from the US Mint and had a box and certificate of authenticity as well...an 1884-O Morgan dollar. The strange thing is, it came in a green US Mint box from the mid to late 90's...I am attaching a picture of a similar box. Unfortunately, the dealer does not allow photos to be taken of his merchandise. I'm still trying to figure this one out...did the US Mint sell circulated Morgan's in the mid to late 90's? The certificate of authenticity was indeed from the US Mint...it stated "Previously Circulated Morgan dollar" and had all of the marks of a legitimate piece of paper from the US Mint.

I've never heard of that. I have seen all sorts of cleverly written COAs with mint-style packaging meant to enable a seller to charge 5x the value of a common circulated coin. Are you sure this came from the US mint?

Just watch Pawn Stars - a fake show has many instances of people producing fake COA's.

Looks like a bunch of beat up junk. Any old dollar could be put in a capsule. Value maybe $17. Mint must have been cleaning out their junk drawer.

Conder101 - I purchased them both from the dealer...I'm still doing some investigating and currently talking with Coin World magazine. They are intrigued by this because they've never heard of this release from the US Mint either.

That's odd because they ran stories and letters to the editor about them.

Do you happen to know the year and issue number when they published anything about them? I'll let the guy know, if so! I'm talking with a Paul Gilkes.

Can't really say, I believe I was still living on Louisville at the time. If so it would have been before 1990. Just did a quick scan of 1987 to mid 90 and didn't see it. Don't have other references available here right now.
