Take a look at this Seated dollar. What do you guys think is going on @ 9 o'clock and 10 o'clock. The two spots in question are left of the stars. This isn't a contest or a trick question.

Two possibilities, but would need real close up to determine, just pixilated out when I tried to expand on that area. 1) a foreign substance, such as glue has dried possibly long ago. That light diagonal mark may be a glue trail? 2) a planchet flaw causing a stiration in that area. what that northern lump is doesn't fit well with this tho, looks like a die chip/dot. More I look at it, #1 is most likely. If it is just glue, then acetone should get it off, but I would suspect it has been on there long enough to turn two-tone if it is removed, be cautious. Glue on the surface would act like a shield and keep it from naturally toning , note around the stars of the areas more protected from hand oils, hence the white "trails" may have acted like a coating.

Yep, I'd suspect some foreign substance on the surface, maybe...would have to examine this one in hand IMO.

Possibly a staple scratch from a neighboring 2x2.

Quote: The two spots in question are left of the stars. I presume you ment to the right of stars. Just looks like a possible hit with something. Spots like this are vague as to origin. Could be almost anything.

Gunk had adhered to the coin's surface and prevented it from toning the same wayas the rest of the surface. It has since fallen off, leaving an untoned area

I'm a bit surprised no one mentioned plugged. That was my thinking at first. Does any one see that possibility? This is a raw coin I'm reluctantly considering.

Love the reverse! As for the front, I agree that it may be glue that should pick off. I'd buy that one for XF money.

Thanks for the helpful feedback as always. When considering these for purchase, a potential buyer really needs put it under as much scrutiny as possible. I'm worried it would come back as altered surfaces, plugged, or repaired. There's only so much you can determine from analyzing a picture and the seller offers no returns. He is asking for a sale price that lands between what PCGS graded au-50 and au-53 sell for. He admitted that he stored it in a clothe in his dresser drawer for a couple years. But when I replied back ' oh, ok, you were trying to tone it' he adamantly denied he was trying to tone it.
