The overdate didn't happen on the coins, it happened on the dies. San Fran sent some dies to the Denver mint, they restamped them.

Hi Becky,

Almost but not quite....In 1938 they were preparing dies at Philadelphia for the Jefferson nickels. It was felt that it didn't make sense to create new dies for Denver Mint Buffalo nickels when a need arose, so they took a die that already had the S mint mark but that had not yet been shipped to San Francisco, and then punched the die to replace the S with a D. Actually, there were three punches into the die, of the D used to obscure the S as best they could.

So, one die and the deed was done in Philadelphia with the die then sent to Denver. The die was never in San Francisco.

Thanks,
Bill
