Another 2018 British 10p from the alphabet series shoeing a cricketer: Quote: Was the Alphabet coin series a popular collectible among the general public in the UK? Yes, commems - but they were issued in such small quantities that many people never saw them - 220,000 of each design in 2018 and around 64,000 of each design in 2019. There have been many stories of bank and post office clerks finding sealed bags of them in their trays, buying them with their own money and then selling them on ebay. Some of the popular designs are now changing hands for about £15 each.

The 1924 Huguenot-Walloon commemorative half dollar offers a two-for-one special! The portraits of Admiral Gaspard de Coligny of France (front portrait) and William the Silent of the Netherlands are each sporting head gear! The coin was issued to mark the 300th anniversary of the settling of New Netherland (present-day New York) by Walloons (French and Belgian Huguenots). 1924 Huguenot-Walloon Tercentenary Half Dollar For more on this coin, check out 1924 Huguenot-Walloon 300th and 1924 Huguenot-Walloon 300th - Revisited.

The Hawaiian warrior chief, dressed in his distinctive royal regalia, on the reverse of the 1928 Hawaiian commemorative half dollar might take offense at simply calling his noble head gear a "hat," but I think it suits the purpose here. The 1928 Hawaiian commemorative half dollar was issued "in commemoration of the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands by Captain James Cook, and for the purpose of aiding in establishing a Captain James Cook memorial collection in the archives of the Territory of Hawaii." (From the coin's authorizing legislation.)The designs for the coin were prepared by Juliet May Frazer of Honolulu, Hawaii. 1928 Hawaiian Sesquicentennial Half Dollar One of my previous posts on the Hawaiian half dollar can be found here: 1928 Hawaiian - Revisited. Two heads, two hats, no waiting! The 1920 Maine Statehood Centennial Half Dollar presents the Maine State Seal on its obverse. The Seal features a shield at its center that depcits a pine tree with a moose below it. Flanking the shield (or escutcheon) are two figures: a farmer (at left) and a sailor; each of the figures is wearing a hat. The Maine half dollar was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Maine's statehood; Maine joined the Union on March 15, 1820 as the 23rd state. 1920 Maine Statehood Centennial Half Dollar You can read more about the Maine commemorative coin here: 1920 Maine Statehood Centennial and here: 1920 Maine Statehood Centennial - Revisited.
