Anything "different" in peoples pocket change, catches their attention and curiosity. For kids/young adults it's the same thing, but on a larger scale.
And yeah, it's just a simple cheap way to begin coin collecting. Eventually they'll get past "the fun" of the State Quarter program and realize the low value and the reasons for it......and evolve into Classic coins hopefully.
These qtrs. sparked an interest in collecting that hasn't ever been seen before....IMHO.

The designs may be different, but the idea of a new quarter series won't be. I don't think people will be as interested this time around. I'd really like to see a series on the two-dollar bill though.

Commemorative banknotes sounds interesting. I think fewer people collect paper money.

However, this would mean no profit for the mint

I don't disagree with this......my comment was just meaning why we saw the "explosion in coin collecting".......people just got interested in it and liked the idea of seeing their state too maybe....dunno......but for whatever reason.....IT WORKED !
But yeah, like you said...."this next time around" won't have the same appeal I suspect. It's getting to be that EVERY COIN YOU SEE WILL BE A "SHINY NEW DESIGNED" COIN NOW THAT YA HADN'T SEEN BEFORE!!
It'll be getting rediculous soon, if it isn't already !...
Rest in Peace

I need to remind everyone here of one important fact: just because the mint makes it, does not mean you have to collect it!

Again, I am being selfish, but I love having a complete 1932~1998 Washington quarter album and hope they never bring the original design back!

A terrible recession may affect these ideas they keep wanting to do.....that's the only way I forsee a "low" in coin collecting.....people being too poor to collect

I'm (we) are there! Here in Michigan!

In regards to this being a global trend I would think the possibility is certainly there if mints = governments can make money making coin then I believe it could be a trend.
By the way which coins / series are similar in Poland?

These:

The-Series-Issue

The "regional series". 16 terribly dull and repetitive designs. All with the "regional coats of arms" invented in 1999 after some administrative reforms. Minted 2004-05.
Still worth only face value due to the excess mintage.

The-Series-Issue

The ongoing "Historical towns". The design is better, as you don't see the same symbols only in different alingment as in the series above, but some landmarks. Still lengthy and pointless.
Minted from 2005.
This week I got another one in the change.

Well now technically your anti-chicken protest is incorrect jbuck.
the international symbol for anti-_______ is a combining of the letters N and O like this;
The-Series-Issue
so you anti-chickenism statement should appear like this;

The-Series-Issue
OK way to much time on my hands
