Hi everyone. I have been collecting coins for many years, but every time I got a Roman coin it simply got thrown into the "unknown" box. Every now and then I spent some time on romancoin.info website, but I still can't figure it out...

It's probably time to ask for help. Can you please help with the following four coins? I used a camera with a side light to show as much detail as possible (hence the reflection). Are any of these worth keeping?

Coin 1: 18mm, 6.9g

Thats a nice selection you have, a good spread of types.

#1 is a tetradrachm from Alexandria issued by Probus. The back is Nike (Victory to the Romans). These are good because they always bear the date of issuance - in this case, Probus 5, which is 279-280AD.

Milne 4601 Probus Potin Tetradrachm of Alexandria. Year 5 = 279-280 AD. A K M AVΡ ΠΡOBOC CEB, laureate, cuirassed bust right / EL to right, Nike, in long chiton, flying right carrying palm and wreath.

2# Is a barbarous imitation of the 4th century - given the hair style, perhaps its Julian or Magnentius, of the FEL TEMP REPARATIO (Happy times are back again) / Roman spearing a fallen horseman. It has a legend, so there might be more to say about it with a betterpicture.

3# is a coin of Constantine II as Caesar, so issued during the reign of Constantine I, from the Lyon mint. The legend is BEATA TRANQVILLITAS (blessed tranquility).

Constantine II, AE follis of Lyons. CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from the back / BEATA TRANQVILLITAS (no break), globe on altar inscribed VO-TIS-XX, C-R across fields. Mintmark PLC. RIC VII Lyons 148.

#4 is Licinius II as Caesar issued in Heraclea, shown here armoured with a spear and shield. The reverse is IOVI CONSERVATORI (Jupiter conserves), the figure is Jupiter (with a captive, right). This oneis interesting because it actually shows its denomination, which is pretty rare on roman coinage (XIImu, 12.5 denarii).

Licinius II, AE follis of Heraclea, AD 321-324. DN VAL LICIN LICINIVS NOB C, helmeted, cuirassed bust left, holding spear and shield / IOVI CONSERVATORI, Jupiter standing left, holding Victory on globe and sceptre, eagle with wreath in beak at foot left, captive at foot right, X over II Mu in right field. Mintmark SMHB. RIC VII Heraclea 54; Sear 15407.

Wildwinds links do not work.

Feel free to post them up and I'll do my best (or I can give you pointers to help you find the information). If you can get a better picture of the barbarous one, that would be interesting - especially the mintmark area beneath the fallen horseman.

Sadly no mintmark legible.

They are all common types in the grand scheme, so none of them are worth anything spectacular. The tetradrachm is probably worth £5-10, the rest £3-5 each - maybe more in SA. I'd keep them, it's a really good spread of types and the Magnentius is hard to come by (but barbarous types just don't command the prices they should). You've got coins from either ends of the empire with some interesting reverses.
