I haven't bought anything in a long while and my budget is certainly small, but I picked this up, described simply as an 'Ancient Roman republican denarius coin'. It might not slab as MS63, but it has some pretty cool features to it and I don't think I could afford this rare type in any better condition.

I invite everyone to have a go at attributing it, see if you can tell why I bought it.

Was it for the "neo-punic legend" on the rev?

Exactly - also of interest is that the obverse and reverse read the same - IVBA REX // (neo-punic - HMMLKT-IWB, an abbreviation of Yubai Hammamleket) - King Juba.

Famous gossip Seutonius relates that Caesar once tugged on Juba's beard during an argument. It is no wonder that when the civil war came, Juba sided with the Republicans. He went with 3 'Legions' to support Metellus Scipio & Labienus at the battle of Thapsus, but fled the field without engaging once he saw that Caesar was unstoppable. His forces were cut off on their retreat and he committed suicide. On his death, Numidia was annexed to the Roman Empire and became Africa Nova.
