I can see pushed over and flattened metal on the "E", from taking a well placed hit in circulation.

On the E,might be a die crack or something stuck on the coin. Maybe an acetone dip and see what happens. On the S, try light from different angle.

To me, it looks like a die chip on the E, and maybe a struck through.
