My project coin this morning has been a nickel. True, not my usual thing but this one is pretty neat. I got it in an error lot labeled as a $ nickel for the cool die crack through the S of PLURIBUS. Spiffy crack on a very nice coin.

But when I put it under the scope I saw a small rim Cud on the reverse as well. So I took some images and sent them off to JC as it is tiny but might qualify for a listing. We shall see what he has to say about that bit.

And then, whenever I do have a nice coin under the scope I just scroll around it as why not, and a DDO showed up. Fairly strong doubling on the crossbar of the T in LIBERTY but there is doubling elsewhere in the motto. With that monster die crack as a die marker I figured it would be easy to attribute. But no. None of the listed DDO's have that crack so...

Any help from the nickel folks on this one would be appreciated. I can send it off if it seems like a new DDO but wanted to check first with folks who know more than I about such things.

I agree nice coin @tb. That die crack appears to go all the way through Monticello too.

Thanks Spence! The die crack officially ends between the I and V of FIVE when viewed under the scope.

And JC has weighed in and said the rim bit was not sufficient to qualify as a rim Cud. So that is off the table.

Nickels are not my area. I think the $ is on the MM and yours is not. Nice die crack non the less. The Cud,are you sure it is not just rim damage? As to the DDO, did you check Brians' site?

The cud-like thing is an honest die crack/chip and related to the die crack visible heading west from the rim there. Not damage. Yes, I checked Brian's site and every DDO variety on VV.

Not a $ die crack, it doesn't run through the mintmark. I agree on the rim Cud and the DDO. I don't know if the DDO is new or not.
