Hi all, I bought a 2004 Silver 1 oz Kiwi for around $18.00 from my LCS about a year ago. So this evening I thought about collecting more Kiwis from different dates. I noticed that all of them sell for a serious premium, the lowest price I could find on any year was $60. Then I noticed that the lowest price I could find for the 2004 was $300! I checked my usual bullion sites (JM, SD, Provident, APMEX) then checked ebay. Are these accurate prices for the Kiwis? I can't find them on the New Zealand Mint website. Did I really get a $300+ coin for $18? AC

Did you check ebay sold values? I just looked and there a few around $50 +/-. Can you post pics of yours? John1

Thanks for the response. Did you see 2004's for that price? I just checked the sold on ebay and didn't see any 2004 for that price. What exactly did you type in the search bar? AC

Looking like you got a really good deal! Do you know what the mintages on those are? I don't think I have seen them in the many bullion threads I have seen here.

It seems to be very hard to find information on this series online. If anyone can post a link that would be helpful! AC

According to Numista, the mintage for 2004 was only 2,000 coins. I am not sure if that is correct or not though. Compare that to the mintage for 2005 (10,000) sounds like it is a more rare coin.

Holy goodness how could he not know what he was selling me? And I thought I was getting a good deal on the 2014 Chinese Panda I paid $20 for that day as well. But the Kiwis I never saw and was entirely unfamiliar with. I just figured, "Well, it's 1 ounce of silver, what the hey?" AC

ACWhammy I collected series of 1 oz. silver bullion for several years and most countries I completed the sets. 2 exceptions are the China Panda and these Kiwi coins. I do own a few and like you bought one from a dealer for just a little over melt. The first two in the series sell for close to $500 each if and when you finally find one even offered. That's why I do not own a set of these.
And to some dealers they are just what you said....an ounce of silver. So once in a while bullion "collectors" like me get lucky. Not often, but it does happen. Nice coin!

That's what I suspected - that the dealer just wanted to move it and saw it as 1 ounce of Silver. I feel more confident now of it's true value, thanks for sharing your story. I just started buying up any foreign bullion I could since I prefer to stack a variety of silver rather than just a bunch of ASE's or Maple Leaves. But the problem is some of the series get expensive! I noticed the original Lunar Series from the Perth Mint seems pretty pricey. Do you collect the various series of foreign bullion or just one of each year? The Maple Leaves have a ton of varieties (privy marks, anniversaries, Lunars, etc.) that I'm wondering it it's worth it to track them down. Which full sets do you have? AC

Incredibly nice pick up for $18! I have one single Kiwi in my collection just to say I have one, and it was over $100 Canadian for a common date (2013) coin after shipping, so it's no real surprise that the low mintage 2004 is worth significantly more. It's an very expensive series to complete, as Debrajc mentioned.
I know the temptation might be to sell it, but I'd highly recommend treating it to a new/uncracked capsule, and holding on to it.

Quote: Which full sets do you have? Way too many!! There is a thread: Silver Bullion Series - Photos in this topic that shows most of my collection. I haven't updated it, but it will give you a good idea.

What's the most you'll usually spend on 1 oz of silver? At the moment, I'm trying to get whatever I can for under $25, but I really like the Chiwoo Cheonwangs and I may have to shell out the cash for those if I want the whole series.

Thank you ACWhammy. It took several years to get to that point. With all the new issues in 2017 it kinda got out of control trying to keep up so I haven't bought as many this year. But will keep my main sets going. As a collector, not a silver stacker I don't have a particular price in mind when I add a coin to my collection. Just like buying Jefferson or Buffalo nickels, Indian Head cents, Washington quartersor any other coin for my collection I look at "fair market value" and what other coins have sold for. It's an entirely different mentality. I look at them as coins made of silver. Not "ounces" of silver.
