I've heard that these issues were extensively counterfeited and there are a few on ebay listed as contemporary fakes, but I can't pick up on what about them is the tipoff. Sellers aren't mentioning it either. They don't seem to have the typical crude contemporary counterfeit look. What distinguishes real and fake CITNs? I can't find any online resources for identifying fakes for this series, so any advice would be appreciated.

Wish I could help provide an answer for you or even point you to a resource or person that can assist but I am unable to. Good luck on the research.

You can sometimes ID a counterfeit by close comparison between the vignette on the note and a genuine BEP vignette print. I'm no expert, but I've seen subtle differences when they were pointed out to me. I'm not aware of any books on this, but you might try an article search in back issues of "Paper Money."
