I voted "no" because it is a waste of money to keep making them. In reality though they will keep making them because that's what the zinc lobbyists in Washinton want. Same thing with the $1 bill. The specialty paper lobby is pretty strong, too.

For business use, DEFINITELY NOT.
If the Mint wants to include cents in specialty sets, let them.
Rest in Peace

To CCF , no, I don't want the mint to keep making pennies . I already have more than I can possibly need to open up my own coin shop .

What better metals? No matter what you use they will be losing money making them. Unless you know of a very LARGE supply of metal that someone is willing to pay you to take off their hands.

This.

Even if material were free, the minting process and material logistics still put the cost well over one cent per cent.

I voted Yes. Only they should be made of Gold or Silver or even Platinum. Then they would be worth more to make and more to use. Why they could even have info stamped on them that says Dollars. Ooops, I just changed the entire subject.
Possibly made of some new material that melts after one use.

But it would still be more than a cent a piece to get them into circulation.

I had to vote no because we have reached the point where I cannot think of a single viable metal that can be produced at or below one cent. The ones being made now get toasted just by pocket use in no time. We gave up the Half Cent. Looks like its time to get rid of the cent too. BTW, I'd fully support the U.S. Mint picking up the slack by getting rid of the dollar bill and switching to dollar coins only!

In the past century there has been so much inflation I don't see what real purpose the cent serves. It is more of a nuisance if anything.

Without pennies items currently priced at $9.99, $9.98 and $9.97, for example will all be rounded up to an even $10.00. With tens of billions of consumer transactions per year, this will result in a boon to business of hundreds of millions per year for doing and providing absolutely nothing. If the government discontinues the penny it will effectively be taxing consumers hundreds of millions per year to subsidize the retail industry. The issue is much larger than whether it costs more than face value to make a zinc one cent coin.
