From a Leu lot that in retrospect, seems to have been part of a larger collection of Roman Antioch. Lots of interesting coins in there!

Gallienus, sole reign 260-68
BI Antoninianus
GALLIENUS AVG, Radiate draped bust right
SAECVLARES AVG, Stag walking right, branch below
Antioch mint
RIC 656
Rare

A-Curious-Gallienus---Saecvlares-Avg

Sometimes lumped under the Zoo Series, this special issue from Antioch is a mystery. Clearly not related to a significant anniversary of the more famous games held by Philip I in 248, their limited mintage at Antioch suggest a more local festival, now lost to history. Their estimated date of mintage is in 265 AD.

I am a big fan of Philips SAECVLARES series; I didn't know Gallienus had anything similar. Do they come in different designs, or is the tiny stag (far away stag?) the only one?

The references also mention a gazelle and an antelope; I'm not convinced those aren't the same animal. There are also cuirassed and mantied bust varieties, facing both left and right. Some also mention a legend variant SAECVLARHS, which looking at my example, I think might be the combination of exaggerated letter serifs and worn dies, not a legitimate spelling error.

From what I read the Ludi Saeculares came to be celebrated after only 50 years by Gallienus who used one method of computation of the anniversary and later again by Maximianus who used another method (one used by Augustus) in order to placate the Gods.
Gallienus needed relief from the continous series of crises which plagued his 18 year reign.
