Opinions? Are these examples of "ear doubling" of some other flaw/damage? Three (3) 1996 cent pieces and the last 2 photos of one (1) 1997 cent piece.

Yep...looks like post minting damage to me.

The difference between these coins and a doubled ear? Note the marks you are seeing on the lobe is damage to that area. It is incuse and does not enlarge the ear area. Now look at the 1997 examples on these images:

Note how the earlobe is enlarged? A first thing to look for. Here is an example of the 1984 SBS with a normal coin:

On all the examples you posted the same thing happened to all of them. PSD
