Not looking for any replies, necessarily. Just reporting an observation that I thought was interesting. Recently I saw a repousse plaque, described as Scythian and featuring bird motifs, listed in an auction. The description stated it had hooks on the back for attachment to a belt. I had the sense of deja vu, feeling as though I'd seen it - or the type - somewhere else, not long ago. I followed up by doing some detective work and I spotted the following from Agora and Vauctions sales over the past few years.

Note: none of these lots are identical relistings. I've studied the rims and have already eliminated repeats that I think were relisted across multiple auctions.

I've also done Google image searches and see no other Scythian plaque types that even remotely resemble these. And dated searches reveal that none of this type is listed prior to 2014.

I'm not suggesting anything nefarious is necessarily going on with these. It may well be that in or around 2014 there was a findspot in which a number of these were dug up. Just weird how they seem to keep popping up at Agora (probably on behalf of the same dealers-consignors) over and over again.

Interesting pattern that would only be picked up by someone with their finger on the pulse of the market for a long time.

I'm not familiar with what scholarly literature exists in this area, but would we expect a find would have been reported somewhere? Or only if it exceeded some threshold of size, novelty, etc.? Or is that also part of what makes this puzzling.

I have not seen these before and from the number of examples you posted they don't seem all that unique. You would think that there would be a reference somewhere for these. Interesting pieces non the less.

That seems like a reasonable expectation to me too, given the scope of the find. And, in fairness, there may be such documentation somewhere. Would the absence of any such record suggest these are of modern manufacture? Or would it perhaps suggest recent looting of a dig site? Or just suggest greed, a rush to market without any scholarly work?

I dunno.

Scythian art was and is not known in the West as most finds are from the ex USSR .As it was a moving people , they were specialists in metal art in gold, silver and bronze .For an impression :https://books.google.be/books?id=Bm...GegQIBBAB#v=
I don t understand their is no reference with this sales to existings books . This belt plates in silver are common , but the problem is that all the interest is going to gold jewelry . albert
