I had these two 1917 large cents in 2x2's and they were full of gunk
on the edges and in the lettering. I have a bounty of hawthorn in my
yard and some distilled water so I soaked the coins over night and
had at them with a stylus with hawthorn branch. The soaking was
important in getting the gunk soft to extract. I was not easy on the
coins and if they were valuable I would have taken more care. The
results are nice, still some small amounts by the stems of leaves and
around legends but better than when they started.

I'm off to the store for acetone.

If you use a hawthorne thorn, you don't want it exactly at 90 degrees to the coin surface. The thorns are extremely sharp and may put a scratch when noodling around letters and digits. I've used hawthorn for 20 years and nothing beats them ... but you have to be careful with them. The great thing about them is that you can sharpen then when they get a dull point.

They look good after your soak its good to experiment on lower graded common coins before you try it on your valuable ones. Good luck with the Acetone it can hurt coins as well as help them, same thing I would experiment the Acetone with less valued coins before moving on to your better ones
