I was shocked to see this coin in the bottom of my 2x2 stock box. I figure an old rubber band from a bundle of 2x2's had some kind of reaction and melted into a plasticine texture. I've seen them deteriorate before, but not this extreme. Just a heads up. . "We are poor little lambs...who have lost our way...Baa...Baa...Baa"

Looks like a creature from outer space landed on that coin. Now why would creatures from outer space want Canadian coins?

With luck the plastic window in the 2x2 protected the coin. If not, acetone should remove whatever is sticking to the coin. BUT Rubber bands have a lot of sulfur in them and make toned streaks on coins (particularly copper). Those can't be removed without cleaning the coin which of course is a no-no.

. Good one. But no heat involved here.

Probably not from a rubber band. That type of rubber cannnot melt to the best of my knowledge.
Looks more like chewing gum to me.

This is why you should never store your coins with rubber bands. I saw an 1806 half dollar with a rubber band mark that came back from PCGS as Environmental Damage which knocked $200 off the value. Even through the Mylar, these things can be very damaging.

Just as an aside, if you have an old CD player that has quit loading the CDs, this is what eventually happens to the drive belt. I had one repaired and the old belt was a step before this condition. The repairman told me they eventually break down completely into goo and it takes a lot to clean the inside of the unit. This may happen with other electronics drive belts. I guess the heat and friction causes it.
I don't know what could have caused that meltdown except poor materials or just a lot of time, especially if heat was not involved. I'm glad the 2 X 2 held up against it. It would be a bummer to have a nice coin tarnished by that goo monster. ;)
