I also recently purchased the memorial key. I believe it is the 1970-s small date, but I would appreciate it if you guys could verify. The pic makes it look nicked and scratched like crazy on the obverse, but it looks pretty nice in hand. I pulled it straight out of a mint set, so it has never seen circulation.

It looks like you have a large date to me. The inside curl of the 9 is pointing to the bottom of the 7.

It is difficult to tell. There is a lot of shadowing, preventing a good look at the curl in the 9. Based on the "level" look of the date and the weak LIBERTY compared to the stronger details, I am inclined to say it might be a small date. I would like to see if you can zoom in on the date, especially the curl of the 9 for a better determination.

It's a tough call with the photo because of distortion around the date. Can you do a closeup of that area?

oooo, I so LOVE using the loupe with this camera. Here are some pretty good shots! I am 99.999% sure that this is the small date. I have been comparing the diagnostics intently to this site: http://www.lincolncentresource.com/...alldate.htmlThe liberty is weak in all the correct spots. The 9 has an inward curve(better evident in my posted photos. The top of the date is even, etc.

Your closeup clinches it for me...the length of the 7's stroke below the 0 is another good diagnostic for LD/SD. I also know how some cameras pick out hairlines over mint luster on coins. This variety is particularly tough to photograph due to die polish lines around LIBERTY and the date.

I think that I have a small date 70 also. But my 7 seems a lot larger than his. I must have the rarest 1970-s now (small date 9 and a large date 7)umm]

definitely large date due to the strong liberty and arangement of the date. I agree though that the 9 looks funny for the large date. I don't know what's up with that.
What would you grade mine guys. The pics definitely don't make the coin look good, lol. I can assure you though that the coin has not been circulated. It hasn't even been touched at all until I removed it from the mint set plastic. There are a few scuffs, but not nearly as many as evident in the photos. MS-60? maybe 61?

I find it's tough to grade MS coins from pics, especially when a camera picks out hairlines (as does mine). Despite that one spot (common on mint set coins), I'm going to guess 62-63 RD.

Sometimes the distinction between large/small date is very obvious, but then other times you get those ones that appear to be somewhere "in-between", much like the one in the pic above. I wonder if there is actually a "medium date" or transitional variety for this year?

Who can send in my picture to PCGS to have them look at it? I wounder if they have seen one before or how many are out there like this one. Maybe they will add it to the error list and I will become a millionaire. Ha Ha
