Can someone please help me? I collect coins, but I have this 1915 Austrian 4 ducat coin that looks to be gold. I haven't had it tested but it looks like gold. My family is from Czech, and this coin belonged to my grandfather that passed away many years ago. My mother just brought it back to the States from Prague. It looks just like the 1915 4 ducat gold coin, but all of the 1915 4 ducat gold coins that I can find on the internet all weigh around 13.** grams. This coin only weighs 8.4 grams. Does anyone have any idea's what this could be....or what the deal could be with this coin? it's approximately 38mm wide. I uploaded photos to flickr... link to photos is below. http://flickr.com/photos/14300001@N02/Edited by Sap 07/23/2008 03:57 am

Yup, it's gold alright. I have the same coin. Only problem I have is finding a holder.

but why does this coin only weigh 8.4 grams, when all others on the net show the weight at 13.** grams for the 1915 4 ducat gold coin?

Yeah, We tried it on a few different ones....they all registered at 8.4 grams which is really confusing me as to why this coin looks the same, has the same writing, but is only 8.4 grams on the weight.....

Maybe it's the picture, but the spot under Franz Joseph's chin looks silver in color. Does the coin have any luster?

It has what I would call a "frosty luster" all around Franz Joseph and even through him. I think what you would see as "silver" in the photo is just from the photo...the coin looks a bit darker through franz joseph and around, except for right under his chin and mustache where there is just a tiny small spot under each that doesn't have such "luster". I see no silver in it at all, just a frosty luster. It looks more like the top photo of this link below...where the coin is a bit darker in the middle and not so much of a luster around the edges. http://www.coinlink.com/Articles/us...-gold-coins/

The 4 Ducat coin KM# 2276 should weight 13.9636 grams and be 40mm, the coin was also restruck from 1920 to 1936 at the same weight as the original issue. It is still being issued today, I suspect that yours is one of the recent strikes.

I suggest having the weight confirmed independently. If it's not 13.96 grams, then I don't think anyone would accept it as being genuine, I'm afraid.

Krause reports these coins were restruck up to 1936, but there's nothing about official reduced-weight examples. I'd agree that if it's that far underweight, it's likely to be a counterfeit / reproduction.

The Austrian Mint still (re)strikes them these days, just like the Maria Theresia Thalers and a few other gold coins. See http://www.muenze-oesterreich.at/dukaten?l=en But this weight difference is, umm, striking. May well be gold but is not the real thing ... Christian

Can't tell by your pics. The coin should look similar to US Proof. Mirror background and objects have satin appearance. This should be true on both sides. I checked the weight of mine and it does weight in at 13+ gms. I would think that yours maybe a fake. Can you take more pics and try to remove the flash?
