WOW Tootallious, that's a heck of a picture. I just couldn't imagine a phone taking a picture anywhere close to that one.

Cell phones 0 USB microscopes 2 Edited to add: Nice pics USSID18 I do understand the effort put forth in trying to utilize the camera on a $700-$1000 phone and maybe it's a budget thing but I'm pretty sure that the microscope is going to win every time. Unless of course you have one of those fancy $6500 DSLR cameras with a professional set up just for taking pics of coins.

Anyone have a google pixel pro, Huawei Mate 20 Pro or s9 note? I'd like to see what results you can achieve and if theres nyone here who actually likes a challenge and doesn't mind experementing, your input would be appreciated.
I did a bit of research today about photographing coins and it seems that if you really want to take a decent photo, you need to create a setup that not only doesn't reflect back at the camera, you also need to work out how to light up a coin to get into all the nooks and crannies, but when it comes down to it seem that its all about manipulating light, angles and dispersing, lastly the photo I took that I posted I found that the more I played with the light, the more my phones camera would focus and I took that picture while I was in bed with 2 tourches for lighting.

Maybe I approached my intentions in a way that people didnt understand, but look at it like this. You buy a phone cover and mod a loupe and glue it to the cover, you can take it anywhere you go. You make a x,y slide rail(like laser engraver or cnc machine) add 2 stepper motors and arduino script and you can automate you camera to move to the next coin by the push of a button, and if you sceen mirror to your tv then it will make your life so much easier.

With all due respect, how would that be easier than a plug and play usb microscope? I honestly do not think that most people would want to go through the trouble of making an a, x, y slide, 2 stepper motors, and a arduino script when you have 10 times the control and precision with a microscope. Not to mention not everyone has a fancy cell phone, especially our elders. Simplicity seems to work much better I think. However, I would like to see this contraption that you talk about so if you make one please share the results with us

These are the last images I've taken with my USB. I think they are much better than any of the OP's 'Camera' images.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

Toot, We live in the age of technology, and if you have never played around or been exposed to the tech that I'm talking about, then dont you think that its worth just kicking back and seeing if I'm full of it or maybe it's possible that I'm looking at things From a different angle.

Nevol, dude I can't deny that they are great pictures, can you please post a close up picture and a full coin picture of a mint 2016 commemorative 5 cent coin, or if you dont have 1, a mint coin from the past few years would be really appreciated(preferably ecidna side) so I have something to compare to. Cheers

You're asking others to post pics and saying how great cell phones are but you haven't posted a single even remotely good pic with your phone and that's what you're trying to tell us.

Technology is a great thing. I could gold plate my toothbrush. Why would I want to? And I can say the same to you, all I'm hearing from you is talk, show me a picture of a full coin with luster from your device that even comes close to the 1 I posted, only full coin pictures are of matt coins, and others have lense flare
