I don't know how much it costs to have a coin graded, but I'm sure PCGS has made a lot grading 40 million coins!

Good question! I've heard a lot of people say they were going to break out a coin and re-submit. You can also tell them the least number you'll accept it graded as and they's not grade it and return it to you. They'll still charge you for it tho... Don't know if they'll put it in a non-graded holder tho...I've stopped sending coins to them.

Probably not as many as most people would think. About 20 percent of that total can be accounted for by ASEs, Morgans, and St Gaudens $20s alone. There absolutely have been resubmission's trying for an upgrade or because someone wanted it raw at one point, but a lot of coins just aren't worth being resubmitted by the average submitter due to cost. I'd think the resubmissions are probably 10-15% of the total and that might be a little high of a guess. There are specific areas where they can be a significant part of that specific population, but overall that's a small part of a series and a minuscule part of everything.

Those don't get holdered at all. They come back in flips or a tube depending on what and how many.

I agree. Looking at the huge variety of slabbed coins out there, I cannot imagine many people daring to gamble for an upgrade.
