Yes, it's definitely brazilian. XX (20) Reis 1821-R(Rio de Janeiro mint) with 52 pearls. The coin itself is not very uncommon. It seems that there was some problem with the die and/or rotation during the striking, then some kind of pressure that can be seen at about 7 o'clock on the reverse. About the grade, much of the finer details are preserved, like the crown. There seems to be more wear on the shield, but the lack of finer details behind the castles indicate that it's a consequence of a weak/problematic strike and/or worn die. It likely didn't look very nice after it was struck. It's worth something, here in Brazil you can get a really nice one for about US$70,00, in this grade for about US$30,00 at it's best.

Interesting. I certainly see some differences between the top example and the two lower ones (some crown details and the alignment of the Xes).

Would that be die variation or counterfeiting? (especially on such a low denomination coin)

Just die variation. It wouldn't be until 1835 that the dies would become more consistent. Rio was the main mint at the time, you should see the provincial ones... Here's one from Bahia (that also had a significant production): https://coins.ha.com/itm/brazil/wor...bnail-071515

These dies inconsistencies are something very interesting for us to study. For most of the silver coins from 1695 to 1832 we have catalogs with every die combination used, describing details and all. Unfortunately for copper coins there is no such catalog yet...
