Hi,
I work at a gas station and recently was given this amongst a lot of change.

obverse: http://i34.tinypic.com/rkx25d.jpg
reverse: http://i34.tinypic.com/34h6pmf.jpg

I can tell that the date says "196". I can nearly make out the last number, and believe it to be a 6 as well. I can make out "GOD" and "UST" from In God We Trust. The coin is slightly larger in diameter than the 2004 dime I have it pictured with.

I have no idea if this is an error, or if someone just flattened a dime (how, I have no idea). It has been bugging me, so any help you can give would be great. thanks.

p.s. sorry for the shoddy pictures.. all I have is a cameraphone

Looks like post-mint damage. Flattened by some means such as railroad track or hammer, who knows.

Hi,

You don't need to post a larger picture. The striations on both sides indicate that this coin was damaged outside the Mint by using a grinding wheel.

Sparks were flying while that coin was being ground down.

Thanks,
Bill

Or an auto rotary Sander. The easy give away is the rims missing. The coin has not been circulated that long for it to be in that bad of shape in circulation.

Thanks for the quick responses. It was the answer I expected, though not the one I hoped for.

Oh well I guess it's back to saving wheat pennies, pre-1964 silver coins, and star notes.

Is this a good starting point for money to look for when working at a gas station?

A lot of the Barber dimes do look that way, but it is because of heavy circulation/weak design/collectors didn't take that much note of them. So circulation can have strong effect but these coins are all almost over 100 years old.
