German States Bavaria Thaler 1871 Proof

So this is a tricky one for me. It is a proof coin that looks better than the pictures, but it has clearly not been protected over the years. How does one grade a proof coin that has either been circulated, or been a bit mistreated?

You can also see that poor Ludwig has a neck wound, hopefully not lethal.

First pictures are close up, but unfortunately you see the camera in the images. Sorry for the upside down image. I flipped it on the computer, but it flipped back when I uploaded.

The second pair (taken from further away with zoom) doesn't show the reflection, but lacks the mirror quality.

I'm interested on opinions on how this would be graded, as well as how it would be valued.

I can sort of see that the mirror effect is real and not just do to polishing, but I would not make a purchase based on those photographs.

There is such a term as "impaired proof", and this looks like it has been handled a bit and that term would apply. I understand that you can get grades like Proof-50 because proof is a way of striking, not a grade as such, so that you can have worn proofs.

it seems to me doubtful that a proof-50 would have any premium over an au-50.

According to the NGC price guide, it would be valued at 350 as a Proof, but only 90 in MS60. Given that, I can't really see getting it graded.

It looks Proof-Like than Proof to me with a possible old cleaning.
