Who says hits are largely ignored in circulated grades?

I do. Hits or marks are the determining factor for grading MS coins. Wear is the determining factor for grading circulated coins - not the number of hits or dings.

You asked for thoughts on grades and problems. I didn't provide a grade.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. I was sharing mine.

In retrospect, I could have been more precise in my language, but I was already referring to grading when I was talking about MS grades so it follows that I was also speaking about grading circulated coins.

Hits are important to determine MS grades, but they are largely ignored in grading coins in circulated grades unless the coin is deemed damaged from it.

Thanks N.S. for the clarification. Our wires were crossed on that one.

I would have brought up the arm but that looks like a typical strikethrough error. Won't count against it. If it is PMD it certainly would be taken into consideration by the grader.
They are more common on Seated dollars and tend to have similar looks:

Dings and marks aren't generally taken into account in circulated grades unless the damage is enough to give the coin a "details" grade.

MikeF, see how clean the marks are on your examples? You can see how there was a foreign body that was stuck to the die. The OP's coin actually has displaced metal. It looks like a large gouge to me not a clean strike during the minting process.

This one came in pretty quickly. Further thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

Coin has a bright red/orange tone under a light at an angle, that is hard to capture. This is the best I could do, but it still doesn't do it justice. Coin is darker than I expected.

Wow, lighting quick delivery! Was the coin wrapped up in Jimmy John's paper?

Now that you have the coin inhand, do you think the arm issue is PMD or strike through?

not 100% certain but I would say struck through a small piece of wire. can't imagine how a hit would leave a mark in that shape.
