RIC assigns them to Lyons (Lugdunum); Göbl attributes them to Cologne. http://gallienus.net/

Thanks KS I thought I was going mad...
I looked at a lot of these coins and was beginning to think there were two types, the difference in the shield size being an indicator of a particular mint, mine being the smaller type with central stud but cant find any reference to it? ...

You're welcome. I would be inclined to go with Göbl over RIC since the former's work is both more recent and more specialized.

Superb example of one of my favorite types of Gallienus. I happen to have one of the same as my joint reign Gallienus:

Nice coin Steve!...
Can anyone tell me why these AR coins were used apposed to the silver washed billon coins?..I seem to remember reading somewhere they were possibly paid to the higher ranking soldiers and cavalry?...Thanks Paul

It is not that there was a great difference in silver content between coins issued at any given point in time but that the coins issued earlier were better than those issued later. As can be seen from the chart below, there was a precipitous decline in the silver content of the antoninianus during the reign of Gallienus from a high of just over 35% early in the joint reign to a low of less than 5% at the time of his assassination.Gallienus-Antoninianus-Need-Help-With-Minthttp://www.ric.mom.fr/en/info/sysmon

Thanks KS..The graph really helps and answers a lot of questions related to other coins too...So I think I'm right in saying the OP coin has approx 25%-30% silver?...Paul
