I bought this coin of Etienne I of Sancerre because of the obverse. It features a bearded portrait of Julius Caesar and the legend "Ivlivs Caesar". The reverse has Stephen count and a cross.

I bought this because I thought it was interesting. The story is that Sancerre was somehow related to Julius Caesar.

"From the Medieval hilltop town of Sancerre, we have an incredible view overlooking the Loire River. This is the ancestral homeland of antiquity's powerful Gaullic Celtic tribe, the Bituriges, "The Kings of the World." After their defeat at the hands of Julius Caesar, a temple was built on a nearby hillside in the Imperator's (victorious general) honor. Many historians and anthropologists lend credence that the temple's name, "Sacred to Caesar," eventually developed into the name, Sancerre. "

Wow. Talk about a coin and place with an interesting history!

These days Sancerre is most famous for its trendy white wine.
(Ooohhh that gives me another idea for a collecting theme!! DANGER!)

Wonder why they put a beard on Caesar? Maybe because at the time the coin was minted all the cool kids wore them?

Ha ha! Great coin!

To the people of mediaeval Sancerre, I give them +5 points for keeping the memory of Julius Caesar alive.

But I give them -15 points for forgetting what he looked like.

Thanks to all for the kind comments. I think he looks more like Gandalf than Julius Caesar.
