I have an 1807 2 reales from Spain - as I have yet to get any specialist books in the area I hope you can help. Some images from auction sites of two coins are below, hopefully they are good enough to demonstrate the issue.

As these two coins are both 1807S-CN they seem to have different obverses and reverses.I have also noted similar differences in the 1807M-AI issue (the most common one and the one I have) although the few images I have found for the rarer 1807M-FA all seem to be the same die pair.

Are these sort of varieties covered in the books?

Assuming these are authentic, small differences in the placement of letters, dots and numbers are normal -- each die was manually created from many individual punches, including the various elements of the shield. Clearly, these two examples were made from different dies. I don't know when Spain converted to hubbed dies but it was not at this time.

I agree with jgenn the variations seen in these two coins are typical of the time period. Creation of working dies from master hubs was not employed in Spain until the 1830s at the very earliest and even then not all facilities followed suit. The rarer the issue the more likely only one die was created to make all of the emission.

There are no books devoted to punching varieties with the exception of very low mintage issues like the Mexican "Hookneck" series.
